Being a nerd for many years, I don't have that problem. My brother in law kept asking my sister why I was taking pictures of walls and other "weird" things. He now has those pictures hanging up in his house.
Do you have any of your work online, so I can see some of your photos, too? I would love to see them. It seems like we tend to like the same types of subjects.

I love old, rusted fire hydrants - though people always give me weird looks when I photograph them.
I come to find that when you are a photographer, you have to find a way to stop getting embarrassed when people give you strange looks! :)
