That is what I tend to do, yes. Actually, none of the macro photos were taken with a true macro lens, just the stock 18-75 stock lens that came with my Sony a100. But, I did get a macro lens for Christmas (it's on order), so I cannot wait to use a real one! :)
That should be fun - I love to chase little critters (butterflys) with mine. It's a 100mm/1.8f so I don't have to get too close to the subject. You'll have a blast with it.
If you really want to test your new macro lens, the Fort Worth Botanical Garden has their butterfly exhibit in the month of March. They release thousands of different butterflies in their big greenhouse. It is spectacular.

Wow, that sounds incredible. I will have to check that out!
It will definitely give me an opportunity to practice with my new lens. Mine is a 50mm, so I will probably have to get closer than you do. :)
